“Bless You”

The reason why people say “bless you” is because your heart stops beating for the moment that you sneeze. It is said that it is a gift from god and that when you sneeze part of your soul comes out and that the devil may take that chance to enter your body and by saying “Bless You” you are chasing away the devil. Also since the heart stops beating for a mili-second by saying bless you are making the heart start beating again. This saying originated from ancient superstitions. Another reason that some believe that we say “bless you” is because when Gregory 1 became pope there was the bubonic plague. Back then sneezing was a common symptom of the plague and by saying bless you the plague would leave your body. This saying originated in AD 77.
